Scripture
Proverbs 20: 18 “Plans succeed through good counsel; don’t go to war without the advice of others.”
Observation
Every person has the need of counselors. We need people who we trust that can give us good advice. There are times when we do not know what to do. There are times when our emotions are so strong it hinders our discernment. We need to have people we can go to that will help guide us. When I look for counselors I ask myself three questions.
1) Do they love me and have my best interest at heart?
2) Will they tell me the truth?
3) Do they have wisdom in the area I need direction?
If the answer to these questions is yes, then I trust them. They will be good counselors in my life.
Application
The time to develop counselors is now. Don’t wait until you need one to try to find one. Nurture relationships with people of wisdom now. Look for people who can help you. I know there are certain areas that I need help. I write them down and then look for people who can help me in that area. For example I need help with personal finance, parenting, pastoring, health, etc. These are areas that I know I want a good counselor. So I begin searching for people who have knowledge in these areas and then develop a relationship with them. When I need advice, I know I can go to them for help.
One last thing on counselors, the greatest counselor you will ever have is the Holy Spirit. Jesus called him our counselor. Go to him with your needs first. Pray in your prayer language. He is the spirit of wisdom and revelation.
Prayer
Father, I thank you that you sent the Holy Spirit to come alongside of me. He is a great counselor and I am grateful for him. Holy Spirit I ask that you lead and guide me today. I ask that you show me what to do and then give me the courage to do it.
I ask Father that you would put people in my life that will be a good counselor to me. I know I need help and I desire it. I humble myself before you and ask that you send good counselors my way. Give me the wisdom to listen and follow good advice.
