July 7 devotional

Scripture

1 Chronicles 4:9-11 “There was a man named Jabez who was more distinguished than any of his brothers. His mother named him Jabez because his birth had been so painful. He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, Oh, that you would bless me and extend my lands! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain! And God granted him his request.”

Observation

There was a book written on these verses that sold a lot of copies. It is the Prayer of Jabez. The Bible says that Jabez distinguished himself in God’s eyes. Jabez did something that caught God’s attention. What was it? Jabez prayed. God made note of his prayer. What was so special about the prayer of Jabez?

1) He prayed that God would bless him. Doesn’t that seem kind of selfish? Yet God granted him his request. I believe God wants to bless you. God desires to bestow his favor upon his children.

2) Jabez asked that God would extend his lands. Jabez prayed for more influence. Jabez lived in an agricultural economy. Owning land meant greater influence. Jabez said God increase what I have.

3) Jabez prayed that God would be with him. Jabez knew that if God was going to increase his influence, he needed more power. Jabez acknowledged his need of God. I can do nothing apart from you, so be with me.

4) Jabez asked God for protection. Jabez’ name meant pain. Jabez was born in pain and had experienced pain in his life. Jabez said God keep me from evil. Keep me from experiencing more pain.

Then end of the passage says that God granted him his request.

Application

What can I learn from the prayer of Jabez?

1) don’t be afraid to ask for God’s blessing.

2) ask boldly

3) seek to do more for God

4) make God’s kingdom my priority

5) seek his protection

6) seek his power

7) distinguish myself by what I pray

8) believe for answers

Prayer

Father I ask that you would bless me, and bless me a lot. Father, increase my influence in the kingdom of God. I want to do more to expand your kingdom on this earth. Give me more of your power. I cannot do it unless you enable me. Keep me from evil because I do not want to cause or experience pain. I don’t want to hurt you, Cathy, the kids or the church. I want to be a blessing not cause them hurt. In Jesus name.
